Do scene commands appeal more than standing rules?

Within the app's Strict Femdom Phrases, premium members rating the receiving side were much warmer to commands contained within a scene than to standing household orders.

By J & L, founders of BeMoreKinky

Commands have a lovely built-in expiry date: do this now. In our Strict Femdom Phrases pack, premium members rating the receiving side said yes to far more commands held inside a scene than standing orders that would follow them into everyday life.

A scene command says, "Do this now." A standing rule says, "This is how things work from now on." Both can feel intensely dominant, but one is held inside the scene while the other has to survive breakfast.

Scene commands end when the scene ends

Scene commands are immediate. Hold still. Get on your knees. Keep your eyes where I told you. They give the dominant something to control and the submissive something to respond to, with the exchange held inside an erotic moment.

The scene boundary marks where the command belongs. A demand can be severe, humiliating or wonderfully unreasonable without becoming an instruction for how Tuesday afternoon should operate.

Standing rules have a longer reach. They might shape clothes, chores, spending or permission outside play. The erotic dynamic has to coexist with jobs, travel, tiredness and the boring practical bits of sharing a life. A phrase that sounds delicious under scene lighting can sound like admin beside a supermarket receipt.

A command can borrow its force from the scene already happening. A standing rule has to keep meaning something after the immediate charge has faded.

Standing rules still apply in everyday life

Ongoing D/s is not simply a longer scene. Daily authority is threaded through ordinary relationship life, where even the most devoted submissive may have a meeting in five minutes and even the most commanding dominant has forgotten to buy milk.

A standing rule can be deeply erotic because it keeps the power exchange quietly present. A particular item of clothing, a ritual before bed or a permission that must be requested can make the dynamic feel tangible on an otherwise unremarkable day. For some couples, the repetition is part of the pleasure.

Shared meaning separates a relationship ritual from one more household task. In Ximena Garcia-Rada, Ovul Sezer and Michael Norton's work on relationship rituals, recurring practices were more beneficial when both partners recognised them as a meaningful ritual. Without that shared meaning, a repeated act can become one more household task that neither person remembers why they started.

A standing order needs a place in the relationship as well as a spark in the fantasy. The words alone cannot do all the work.

Most people did not want a partner controlling their spending

The wallet-control instruction lands on something stubbornly real. Money is rent, independence, treats, debt, status and the argument about who ordered takeaway last time. Turning it into a site of authority can be electrifying for the people who want exactly that. Most receiving-side raters did not.

The phrase makes a broad fantasy concrete. "Obey me" can carry many fantasies. Handing over a wallet tells you what obedience would touch.

A specific phrase can expose the point where a fantasy stops working. A stern voice may be appealing while the particular thing it demands is not.

People giving and receiving commands tended to like the same ones

People answering from the giving side put the phrases in nearly the same order as people answering from the receiving side. The commands with broader appeal on one side tended to have broader appeal on the other; the harder sells remained harder sells.

The person giving an order may perform complete entitlement to obedience. Underneath the performance, dominants have tastes about commands too. A line can feel potent to say, faintly ridiculous or far too entangled with household life. It needs to feel good to give as well as receive.

Wanting commands in a scene does not mean wanting rules in everyday life

"Orders or rules?" sounds like a choice between two words for much the same thing. The difference is how long the authority is meant to last.

For now can support an intense command because the scene holds it. From now on asks both people to carry the command into a different setting and keep feeling its charge. Someone can crave the first and have no appetite for the second. Someone else may find the lasting thread much more erotic than any isolated instruction.

A command can be thrilling because it takes over the next minute. A standing rule still has to feel like kink when the scene lighting is gone and the kettle is on.
