Hands-on care guide

How to Clean a Sex Doll: TPE and Silicone Maintenance Guide

When my first Tantaly doll arrived, I was so buzzing to try it that I nearly skipped the initial clean. I've owned both TPE and silicone at this point, and I'll hold my hands up: I was absolutely the person who thought a quick wipe-down would do. I did, once. Found mould in places you really, really don't want to find mould.

So here's everything I've learned about keeping a Tantaly doll clean and in good nick. Some of this comes from Tantaly's current cleaning guidance, some from the community, and a lot from my own trial and error over dozens of uses. You can see what that routine is like with a 41.7 lb fixed-canal torso in my Tantaly Candice 2.0 review.

The essential routine

How to Clean a Sex Doll: The Short Version

After each use, remove any clothes or inserts, wash the exterior gently with warm water and mild soap, flush fixed tunnels until the rinse water runs clear, pat the skin dry, use a drying stick inside the tunnels, then air-dry everything completely. Powder the exterior only after it is dry, and never store a doll while moisture remains inside it.

That is the best way to clean a sex doll in one paragraph. The material differences and drying details below are where most damage and mould problems happen.

Frequency

How Often Should You Clean a Sex Doll?

Tantaly's official line is: clean before first use and immediately after each use. Their current care-kit guidance also says to clean a stored doll at least monthly. The "after each use" bit? You cannot skip that. I know it's the last thing you want to do afterwards, but the active routine genuinely takes about 10 to 20 minutes once you know what you're doing. The monthly clean for unused dolls sounded excessive to me too. Then I left one sitting for six weeks and the surface had gone properly tacky.

Know your material

TPE vs Silicone Sex Doll Cleaning

This is something I wish someone had drilled into me earlier. TPE and silicone need different care, and the internet is full of people casually mixing up advice for both. Tantaly themselves are quite clear on this:

TPE

TPE needs more ongoing care because it is porous. Warm water, mild soap, sorted. Mine started looking chalky after a couple of months and I panicked a bit, but it turns out a rub of mineral oil or baby oil brings TPE right back. Water-based lube only when you're using it.

Silicone

Silicone is pickier about everything. Water below 40 degrees or you risk damaging the silicone. You want mild antibacterial soap and soft cloths or sponges for the wash. Water-based lubricant only when you use it. Everything else you might think to put on silicone? Petroleum jelly, silicone lube, mineral oil? All of it will degrade the material. I know I sound like a broken record but I've seen what happens and it's ugly.

I've seen people happily slathering mineral oil on silicone dolls because some forum told them to. Wrong advice, wrong material. If you take nothing else from this post: know what yours is made of and stick to the care instructions for that material.

Post-use routine

How to Clean a Sex Doll After Use

I'm not going to sugarcoat this: cleaning after use is a faff. Expect to spend at least 20 minutes on it, and that's once you've got the routine down. All of your erotic energy has evaporated and you're stood there with a flushing bulb in one hand and a damp cloth in the other, feeling decidedly un-sexy. That's the reality. Be prepared for it.

There are models with detachable inserts that are apparently much quicker to clean. I didn't get one, so I can't speak to that, but if the post-use cleanup is a dealbreaker for you, look into those before you buy.

Here's what I do every single time:

1

Strip and Inspect

Everything off first: clothes, wig, whatever accessories are on there. Then I look over the whole surface for scratches, tears, colour transfer. Much easier to spot fresh damage before soap and water get involved.

2

Flush the Tunnel

I use a flushing bulb (Tantaly sell their own care kit, or any soft squeeze bulb works) with warm water. If I've used soap internally, I keep rinsing until there is absolutely zero foam left. With the automatic douche, you need to keep it moving rather than leaving it stationary in one spot.

3

Drain the Tunnel

Now squeeze around the abdomen area, and then the buttocks, to work out the water trapped inside. Go easy on it. I mean really easy. You're not wringing out a flannel.

4

Pat the Exterior Dry

Grab a soft microfiber cloth and pat the outside dry. Patting motion, never scrubbing. Tantaly are explicit that wet TPE skin tears more easily, and I believe them because I've seen what happens when you get impatient.

5

Use a Drying Stick

Insert it gently, follow the timing instructions supplied with that stick, then remove and check it. If there's still moisture, repeat with a fresh one. Do not leave it in overnight and do not store the doll with the stick still inside. It can tear the tunnel walls.

6

Air-Dry Completely

Ventilated room, maybe a fan on low. No radiators, no direct heat, no hairdryer on hot. Tantaly grudgingly allow a cool hairdryer setting in one of their guides but it's clear they'd rather you just waited.

7

Powder the Exterior

Do this last, and only once completely dry. Light, even layer with a soft brush. Exterior only. Do not pour powder into the tunnels.

That's it. Every time. No exceptions.

Exterior cleaning

How to Wash a Sex Doll's Body

For a general wash (as opposed to just the tunnel), I work in sections. Wipe one area with a damp soapy cloth, wipe again with clean water, and so on. I also put them in the bath to clean them (but be warned, this can cause rips).

One practical thing nobody warns you about: these things are heavy. If you do decide to wash yours in the bath (and for a full body wash it's the most logical place), be prepared for the lifting. Getting a wet, slippery doll in and out of a bathtub is an awkward workout. I've nearly dropped mine more than once. Just be aware of it before you commit to bath cleaning rather than the sectional wipe-down method.

For TPE: warm water (no hotter than about 50 degrees) and mild soap.

For silicone: slightly cooler (40 degrees max), mild antibacterial soap, soft sponge or microfiber cloth.

The first clean after unboxing deserves a full exterior wash. There'll be white particles from factory powder mixing with oils during shipping, and you want all of that off before anything touches your body.

Internal cleaning

How to Clean Fixed Tunnels and Removable Inserts

Tantaly's official internal cleaning method is: flush, rinse, drain, drying stick, air dry. That's the manufacturer-backed answer, and in my experience it works perfectly well for routine use.

If you have a model with a removable insert, do not flip it inside out to clean it. Warm water, mild soap, gentle handling, store it dry.

For those of you who are anxious types (I include myself in this), a borescope or otoscope lets you visually inspect the tunnel for retained moisture, lint, or the beginnings of mould without having to stick your fingers in and hope for the best. I picked one up after reading about it on the Tantaly subreddit and it's become part of my every-few-weeks check. Not strictly necessary, but reassuring.

Detail work

Seams, Folds, and Awkward Bits

Tantaly don't publish a specific seam-cleaning procedure, which is slightly annoying. My approach, inferred from their general surface-cleaning guidance: same mild soap and water, less pressure, very soft cloth, and careful pat-drying. Folds are the worst for trapping water so get in there carefully. And if you notice a seam is already lifting or peeling, back off with the cleaning and deal with it as a repair instead.

TPE care

Oiling (TPE Only)

God, the internet is a mess on this one. Some people swear by monthly oiling, others say once a year, and there's a whole camp of "never oil it at all." Here's what Tantaly actually say: oil only when needed, and not too often.

In practice, I oil when the TPE surface starts looking dry or slightly ashy. For darker TPE dolls, this is more visually obvious. A modest amount of mineral oil or baby oil, let it absorb, then powder over the top once dry. No schedule. If the surface still looks fine, don't bother.

Never oil silicone. Different material, different rules. I cannot stress this enough.

TPE care

Powdering a TPE Sex Doll

Tantaly's own renewal powder is primarily magnesium silicate (talc) with silicon dioxide. Their help pages also say baby powder or cornstarch are acceptable alternatives.

I didn't get the Tantaly powder with mine. I just use cornstarch from the supermarket. Works fine, costs next to nothing. That's a practical preference, not a claim that Tantaly's powder is dangerous.

Aftercare

How to Store a Sex Doll After Cleaning

Tantaly's storage guidance is specific and worth following, because storage mistakes create the problems you later have to repair.

Store fully dry. Use the original fitted packaging if you haven't already chucked it. Room temperature, somewhere dark and dry. No sunlight, no radiators, keep it away from strong smells and anything PVC or silicone. Do not leave it dressed for storage, especially in dark, dyed or tight fabric. If you want to dress yours, wash the clothing first, test it on a hidden area and remove it again after use.

If you've got a half-body torso, store it lying flat with the chest facing up. Hip torsos go the other way, chest-down. This reduces deformation over time. And don't put the plush satin bag inside the polystyrene box; the bag's thickness can create compression marks.

One thing I learned the hard way: do not let the doll rest against Tantaly's own black outer handbag during storage. It stains. Bit ironic, that.

Troubleshooting

Sex Doll Cleaning Problems and Solutions

Sticky skin after cleaning?

It's not fully dry. Make sure it is, then powder.

White particles on a brand new doll?

Factory powder mixed with oil during shipping. Normal. Clean before first use.

Dark TPE looking "ashy"?

Wash, dry, light mineral oil application, let it absorb, then powder. Only do this when the ashiness appears.

Musty smell?

Re-clean thoroughly, repeat the drying stick cycle, ventilate properly, and do not use the doll again until it's fully dry inside. A borescope can help check what's going on in there. Tantaly are explicit that retained tunnel moisture promotes bacteria and mould.

New-doll smell?

That's off-gassing from the material after being sealed in packaging for however long. Best thing you can do is leave it out nude in a room with a window open for a few days. Wash it when you're ready, warm water and mild soap, then let it dry fully and powder up. Do not spray perfume on it. Do not put essential oils on it. Both make the smell worse.

Colour transfer from dark clothing?

I learned this one personally. I put a dark dress on one of mine and the dye absorbed straight into the TPE. No amount of washing got it off. Remove the clothing, wash the area gently and then use only a stain treatment approved for that material. Prevention is the real answer: wash and test clothes first, avoid leaving dark fabric on for long, and never store the doll dressed.

Tears or scratches?

TPE and silicone need different repair products. Stop cleaning the area forcefully and follow the manufacturer's repair process for that material.

Hygiene

Sexual Health

I'm going to say this bluntly because nobody seems to think about it with sex dolls: the hygiene risks are the same as with any other sex toy you'd put near or inside your body. Share one without barriers, skip the cleaning, go from one body site to another without swapping condoms, and you're asking for an infection. A study published in Sexually Transmitted Infections detected HPV DNA on sex toys after standard cleaning in some cases.

Clean after every use (which you're already doing if you've read this far). Use condoms or barriers if sharing or moving between body sites, with a fresh barrier each time. Stick to a mild, unscented soap that the manufacturer approves for the doll.

What to buy

What You Need for Sex Doll Cleaning and Maintenance

You can do this cheaply with stuff from the supermarket, or you can buy into the Tantaly ecosystem. The essentials are mild unscented soap, a flushing bulb, soft microfiber cloths, at least one drying stick, a soft powder brush and renewal powder or cornstarch. Add mineral oil only for TPE maintenance, not silicone.

Questions

Sex Doll Cleaning FAQs

What Is the Best Way to Clean a Sex Doll?+

Use warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth on the exterior. Flush fixed tunnels until no soap or lubricant remains, pat the skin dry, use a drying stick and then air-dry the doll completely before powdering or storage.

How Often Should You Clean a Sex Doll?+

Clean it before first use and immediately after every use. If it has been stored, inspect it at least monthly and clean it again before use if it has collected dust or become tacky.

What Soap Can You Use on a Sex Doll?+

Use a small amount of mild, unscented soap or body wash approved by the manufacturer. Avoid alcohol, bleach, exfoliating products, perfume and harsh household cleaners.

How Do You Clean a Silicone Sex Doll?+

Use warm water below the manufacturer's temperature limit, mild antibacterial soap and a soft cloth or sponge. Rinse it thoroughly, pat rather than rub, dry every internal area and do not apply mineral oil or baby oil.

How Long Does a Sex Doll Take to Dry?+

The active drying-stick cycle may take 20 to 60 minutes depending on the product and how much moisture remains, followed by air-drying. Do not store the doll according to a timer; store it only when the surface and tunnels are completely dry.

Can You Wash a Sex Doll in the Bath?+

That depends on the model. Check the manufacturer's instructions, keep any electrical components out of water and remember that a wet full-size doll or torso is much harder to lift safely. Cleaning it in sections is often easier.

What Should You Do If a Sex Doll Has Mould?+

Stop using it. Tantaly warns that invisible spores may remain even if visible mould is removed. Contact the manufacturer about replacing a removable insert or retiring the affected doll.

Avoid damage

What Not To Use

I'm putting this at the end because if you've read everything above you already know most of it, but just in case someone's skimming:

Alcohol on either material. Bleach, harsh cleaners. Perfume, essential oils. Silicone-based lube on TPE. Mineral oil on silicone. Petroleum jelly on silicone. Silicone oil on silicone. Abrasive cloths or paper towels internally. Direct heat from radiators or hot hairdryers. Sharp tools inside the tunnels (I hope this one's obvious but I've seen people ask).

None of these. Ever.

Maintaining a Tantaly doll is not complicated, but you do have to actually do it. Every time. The routine is quick once you've done it a few times: flush, dry, powder, store. Skip it and you're looking at mould, tears, and frankly a health risk you don't need.

Know your material. Follow the manufacturer's guidance as your baseline. Be sceptical of random forum advice that contradicts the official line. And for the love of all that is holy, let the thing dry properly before you put it away.
