SPUNK Hybrid lube review: the fake cum lube I'd use even if it didn't look like cum

SPUNK Hybrid is a creamy white lube designed to look like semen. And, it really does look like it. I spent a few weeks testing it solo, with a partner, on a sex machine, with silicone toys, in ejaculating dildos and on camera. In contrast to a lot of other fake cum lubes, it doesn't just look good, but performs very well as a lube.

Verdict

Strongly recommended.

It lasts well, makes little mess and looks convincingly like cum. Skip it for oral sex, though, or if you avoid parabens.

The lube

What SPUNK Hybrid is

SPUNK is made in the US by D. Enterprises. According to SPUNK's own history of the brand, the Hybrid formula began life in 2010 as a lube for adult studios, created to look realistic on camera and last through a whole shoot.

It's a water and silicone hybrid. The Hybrid product page lists the full formula as:

Water, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Dimethicone, Dimethiconol, Propylene Glycol, Hydroxymethylcellulose, Methylparaben.

What isn't in there? Glycerin, sugar, added flavour or fragrance. It does contain propylene glycol and the paraben preservative methylparaben. SPUNK describes Hybrid as 510(k) cleared, toy friendly and non-staining, and compatible with most toys, including platinum-cured silicone.

I tested all three sizes: the small squeeze bottle, the pump bottle, and the gallon jug.

Texture

How it feels

Hybrid is creamy and medium-thick. It holds its shape briefly before flowing, so it's easy to put where you want it. Rub it in and the opaque white colour becomes clearer. A generous blob looks like cum; spread thinly, it's a glossy, slightly milky lube.

It never felt sticky during use. When I left a layer to dry on my skin, there was a little tackiness afterwards. Barely anything, but it's my only texture gripe.

Neither my partner nor I experienced irritation during testing. No burning, itching or redness, and yes, that includes anal use.

Staying power

How long it lasts

Hybrid comfortably outlasts water-based lube, because the silicone helps stop it soaking in and vanishing at the worst possible moment.

The most useful number came from the Hismith. One application usually lasted 10 to 20 minutes of relentless machine use before I needed more. For a water-containing lube under constant mechanical friction, that's pretty good.

I also left a few blobs on a black cotton t-shirt. Six hours later, they were still sitting wet on the surface and looking exactly like what you're thinking.

SPUNK says a little water reactivates the glide once it starts to dry. I haven't properly tested that claim myself.

Mess

Staining and cleanup

I repeated the test on a white t-shirt. After 12 hours, most of the lube had soaked in and left a faint dried outline, noticeable only because I hunted for it. Both shirts came out clean after a normal wash. Your secret's safe.

On skin, it rinses away with plain water. No soap required, and none of that lingering pure-silicone slipperiness.

In use

How I used it

Using it solo. The pump made it easy to control the amount, and it lasted well. No mood-killing scramble for a top-up.

Partnered and anal. The thickness and staying power make it good for anal, where lube giving up early isn't an option. We used it with latex condoms without problems, and SPUNK lists Hybrid as latex-safe.

Sex machines. I used it on a Hismith Premium Pro 3, getting the 10 to 20 minutes per application mentioned above. Sex machines are relentless, of course. That's rather the point.

Silicone toys. Hybrid lubes have a reputation for wrecking silicone toys, so I paid attention here. After a few weeks, mine haven't dulled, become tacky or swollen. That supports SPUNK's claim that Hybrid is safe with platinum-cured silicone. I'd still spot-test an expensive toy of mystery material first.

Ejaculating dildos. This worked amazingly well. I loaded it into ejaculating dildos and it travelled through the reservoir and tube without clogging. It looked gloriously realistic coming out, and the reservoir flushed clean with water afterwards. That moment of release is the whole point of an ejaculating dildo. This is the fluid to use.

On camera. It looked convincingly real on screen. Given SPUNK's studio origins, I'd have been rather disappointed if it didn't.

Sizes

The pump, the squeeze bottle and the gallon

The pump behaved perfectly throughout. It dispenses a consistent amount and I could use it one-handed mid-session without smearing lube over a fiddly flip cap. If I were buying one size, I'd choose the pump.

The squeeze bottle is the travel option. The gallon jug is the size SPUNK sells to studios. Unless you get through a lot of lube, or regularly refill pumps and ejaculating dildo reservoirs as I did, it's comically excessive.

Watch-outs

Who it's not for

Oral sex. This is my biggest criticism. Hybrid has a mildly soapy taste which I found unpleasant. Harmless, yes. I certainly didn't enjoy it. I didn't like it in my mouth or when going down on a partner who'd used it during sex. In fairness, SPUNK doesn't market Hybrid as edible. If oral is on the menu, wipe it off or switch lubes for that part.

People avoiding parabens. The label lists methylparaben as a preservative. If parabens are an immediate no for you, SPUNK's own Pure Silicone and Natural formulas are both listed as paraben-free.

The rest of the range

SPUNK's other two formulas (not tested)

I've only personally tested Hybrid, so the following details come from SPUNK's own descriptions:

  • Pure Silicone is clear, has four silicone ingredients, and is described as waterproof and non-drying, with no glycerin, parabens or preservatives. SPUNK recommends spot-testing it with silicone toys.
  • Natural is just organic avocado oil and organic virgin coconut oil. It's sold as edible and works as a massage oil, but SPUNK says not to use it with latex condoms or latex products.

Neither looks like cum. If that's the reason you're here (you'll get no judgement from me), Hybrid is your only option.

Bottom line

Final verdict

SPUNK Hybrid lubricant pump bottle on a black background: a black 8 fl oz bottle with the SPUNK logo in white

I'd buy the pump bottle again. For cum play, ejaculating dildos or filming, I can't think of a better choice. Even without the fake semen effect, SPUNK Hybrid earns its place in the bedside drawer.
